Patrick Sjöö – System Developer
Hey Patrick, explain a little about yourself!
I am a System Developer in my prime. I currently live in Västerås with my Girlfriend and dog. I like playing video games and it was always a dream of mine to become a programmer, so after my military service I studied computer science with a focus on game development at Mälardalens University. I started working at Avalon in Västerås in January 2018.
What is it like to work at Avalon Innovation?
Absolutely fantastic! We have interesting projects and I feel there is a lot of freedom when it comes to picking from them. The benefit of being able to decide which projects you want is very unusual compared to the other companies I’ve worked for. If you want to learn something new, there is essentially always an opportunity to try it through new assignments.
Then there are the incredibly nice people who work here as well! We invent many things and a lot of focus is put on making sure there is a sense of belonging within the team. Avalon is not a huge company so it allows for more time for the individual.
Is there any assignment that was extra memorable for you?
Yeah, when I worked on a project for a customer in medtech. We developed a complete solution for an alarm system where I was primarily focused on the backend. As a programmer, it was nice to
see a physical product that gave direct feedback, as opposed to just seeing values go from one place to another. Being able to see and touch your code was a really cool experience!
We were a tight bunch and there was a happy atmosphere in the project every day, so it felt like hanging out with a bunch of friends.
How would you describe our company culture?
There is a lot of focus on teamwork. I feel like my voice is heard and we have an open and free company climate. All our ideas are encouraged and we have a lot of interesting conversations.
Everyone is unique and is very noticeable in the recruitment process that they focus on both the person’s competence as well as the individual behind it. Everyone is different, but we work towards a common goal – and we strive to be the best, not the biggest.
What is your biggest driving force at work?
I am an optimist (of course!) and my biggest driving force is to make progress and to always learn new things. To take on new tasks, to move forward, and to make the puzzle pieces fit – it is exhilarating!
